Man United on red alert over Antoine Griezmann as Atletico Madrid striker’s release clause drops to €100m

Manchester United, as well as other top clubs around Europe, will be following Antoine Griezmann even more closely this season following news of his release clause being reduced significantly.

The French superstar, who was widely linked with the Red Devils this summer but opted to stay with Atleti given they would not have been able to find a replacement due to their transfer ban, can now leave the Red and Whites if a bid of €100m or more comes in.

Griezmann signed a new deal with Diego Simeone’s men in June, which included a temporary €200m exit clause, to ward off interest from potential suitors.

But, as part of this arrangement – according to Marca – a stipulation in his contract meant his release clause would go back to the original €100m mark following the closure of the transfer window.

Given the huge fees shelled out by both PSG and Barcelona for stars Neymar (€222m) and Ousmane Dembele (€150m) this summer, Griezmann’s contractual price-tag may seem like small change to Europe’s elite.

It remains to be seen whether Jose Mourinho’s men or indeed Barcelona renew their interest in the striker come January or next summer.
