Southampton target Man Utd pair as squad re-build continues

Southampton are targeting moves for two Manchester United players as the club continues the process of rebuilding their squad following a mass exodus this summer, according to reports.

The Saints have seen five first-team players leave, with Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren joining Liverpool, Calum Chambers heading to Arsenal, and Luke Shaw making his way to Old Trafford.

And according to the Daily Mail, Southampton are looking to outlay up to £70 million (Dhs432m) of the £100m (Dhs618m) they’ve received from the quintet’s sales on new players.

The report claims two of manager Ronald Koeman’s top targets are United striker Javier Hernandez and his teammate Wilfried Zaha, both of whom are not guaranteed starters under Louis van Gaal.

Mexico forward Hernandez enjoyed a blistering debut season for United following his move from Guadalajara in 2010 – scoring 20 goals and striking up a deadly partnership with Wayne Rooney.

However, the 26-year-old has become increasingly marginalised at Old Trafford – particularly after the arrival of Robin van Persie in 2012 – and has been used primarily as a substitute.

Southampton culd face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid after manager Diego Simeone admitted the Liga champions were interested in signing Hernandez

Meanwhile, Zaha is yet to establish himself in the United squad following his move from Crystal Palace and spent the second half of last season on-loan at Cardiff City.
