Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is adamant he prefers titles with his club over individual awards.

The Spaniard was present at the FIFA gala where he was chosen in the FIFA Best XI alongside team-mates Marcelo, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard. The defender joked that he would have taken up tennis if he was bothered about individual titles.

“I’d prefer to not come here and for Real Madrid to win titles,” he said at the awards, according to Marca.

“If I’d wanted to win individual titles, then I’d have dedicated myself to tennis.

“When the team wins, we always win. It wasn’t a good season last year, but it’s a good sign that Real Madrid have players in the XI.”

Marcelo’s inclusion in the team triggered debate, given he was far from his usual self last season. But Ramos believes the Brazilian is still one of the best in the world.

“He’s one of the best in the world,” Ramos said when asked about the Brazilian’s inclusion.

“Everyone is free to comment. It’s hard to please everyone.”
