Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu has emerged as a serious option to host the much-delayed Copa Libertadores decider between bitter rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate, according to reports.

Saturday evening’s Superclasico was twice called off before finally being put back to Sunday after the Boca bus came under attack as it arrived at River’s El Monumental. Sunday’s clash was also then cancelled, amid acrimony between the clubs and CONMEBOL.

The governing body announced on Tuesday that the second leg – the first meeting was drawn 2-2 – will be played on foreign soil on either December 8 or 9.

El Chiringuito TV have stated that Madrid’s 81,044-capacity home has emerged as a major contender to play host.

Abu Dhabi, Doha, Miami, Asuncion and Saint Petersburg were all previously pitched as putting on the contentious match.

Television footage showed River supporters hurling objects at the bus as it made its way to the ground. Boca players were injured by flying shards of glass from broken windows and were also taken ill due to the effects of tear gas, reportedly used by the police to disperse the crowds.

According to reports in Argentina, a number of players, including Boca’s former Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez, suffered from dizziness and vomiting and had to be treated by club doctors. Footage apparently from inside the Boca dressing room showed the players groggy and disorientated.
