Real Madrid’s plan to upgrade the Santiago Bernabeu has been given the green light.

The development would take until 2022 and cost €525 million euros.

The financing was approved on Sunday while the work is set to begin at the start of next year. However, the stadium’s capacity of just over 81,000 will remain the same.

Madrid have announced record revenue of €750.9 million for 2017-18 and the new project is expected to generate an extra €150 million per year.

“It will be more modern, more secure,” Florentino Perez said. “There are two objectives: to improve the comfort and accessibility for our fans and secondly, to obtain more income.”
