Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed the Whites did not want to sell Cristiano Ronaldo but agreed to let him leave after he informed the club of his desire to move from the Bernabeu.

Speaking ahead of Real’s general meetings on Sunday, Perez admitted he had to “open the door” for the club legend to change clubs but insists the €100 million fee they received from Juventus was good business.

Ronaldo departed in July, ending a record-breaking nine-season spell in the Spanish capital.

“We did not want to sell him, but he wanted to go for personal reasons and we understood that, for all the good things he had done, we had to open the door for him,” Perez said.

“We got the highest value we could.”
