Thibaut Courtois has apologised to Real Madrid fans after footage emerged of him singing an offensive song about his new club in 2013, when he was playing for rivals Atletico Madrid and celebrating a 2-1 win over Real in that year’s Copa del Rey final.

“I was very young at that time, I got carried away in the moment,” Courtois said. “I apologised at the time and I do again now. It was a youthful indiscretion.

“They [Madrid fans] will see that I will give it my all for the Real Madrid badge to win the games.”

The Belgian goalkeeper signed for Real on Thursday, joining from Chelsea in a £35million deal.

It’s possible that Courtois’ Madrid debut will come against his old club, as Real and Atletico are set to play next Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn.
