Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has admitted that he was upset after not being named in the starting line-up for the Champions League final against Liverpool.

The Welshman was left out by then coach Zinedine Zidane despite having had a few good games on the trot, leading up to Kiev’s May showpiece.

“I was frustrated, I’ve said it before, for not being a starter,” he said.

“I knew I was capable of being important in the game but that’s how it was.”

The 28-year-old though still managed to steal the limelight, after coming on as a substitute and scoring an unbelievable over-head kick that was crucial in leading his team to a 3-1 win and their third consecutive Champions League title.

“It was great to score that goal, pure emotion, it’s one of those things you do not think about, you just react,” Bale explained while speaking in Cardiff.

“I always wanted to score an overhead kick, but to score it on that occasion… it was definitely the place to do it.

“I went on vacation afterwards and tried to disconnect, so I have not seen it many times… but if you don’t try those things, they never come off.”
