Man United player ratings as unleashed Paul Pogba runs riot in 4-1 win over Bournemouth

Paul Pogba was the star of the show as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United cruised to a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Frenchman’s opener on five minutes owed much to the brilliant skill of Marcus Rashford who dribbled beyond two Bournemouth defenders, before crossing for Pogba to tap into an empty net.

Pogba then powered home a header from Ander Herrera’s inviting cross and Rashford’s outside of the boot finish put United 3-0 up.

Nathan Ake’s header reduced Bournemouth’s deficit before half-time, but Pogba turned provider for substitute Romelu Lukaku to make it 4-1 and only the post denied Pogba a first ever hat-trick.

Here, we rate the performances of United’s players.

STARTING XI (4-3-3)

David De Gea – Had a quiet night with only a couple of routine saves to make, while there was little he could do against Ake’s effort. 6

Ashley Young – Provided ample support at the top end of the pitch, but was rarely used. Picked up a booking for a rash challenge. 5

Eric Bailly – Sent off for a completely unnecessary and reckless lunge on the halfway line after escaping punishment for a high boot moments earlier.

Victor Lindelof – Calm and assured at the back. In complete contrast to his central defensive partner. 6

Luke Shaw – Tracked back well on occasion and provided a threat on the overlap in attack. 6

Ander Herrera – Covered plenty of ground, making several contributions at both ends of the pitch. Good cross for the second goal. 7

Nemanja Matic – So much more positive with his passing, always looking to play forward. Kept things ticking over in midfield. 6

Paul Pogba – A completely different breed of midfielder since Solskjaer took over. Bossed the game, creating chances and getting on the end of them. With a brace and an assist, he was a class apart. 9

Jesse Lingard – Surprisingly subdued on a night when goals were there for the scoring. No efforts at all from the Englishman. 5

Marcus Rashford – Relentless in everything he did. Kicked things off with a phenomenal bit of skill to set up the opener and took his goal expertly. 8

Anthony Martial – Looked threatening again with his pace and trickery, his link-up play – particularly with Pogba – is only improving. Great assist for Rashford’s goal. 7

SUBS

Romelu Lukaku (70′) – Made an immediate impact off the bench. A suspicion of offside, but finished his chance with aplomb.

Andreas Pereira (76′) – Wasn’t involved much after his introduction as United eased up following the red card. N/A

Phil Jones (82′) – Saw out the game after coming on. N/A
