Man United the ‘best place’ for David de Gea and Anthony Martial, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there aren’t many better clubs to play for than Manchester United as he aims to secure David de Gea and Anthony Martial to long-term contracts.

The club recently triggered one-year extensions for both players, prolonging their current deals to the summer of 2020, and talks over long-term extension are ongoing.

De Gea is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world and has won United’s player of the year award in four of the last five seasons.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial has begun to deliver on the potential that led United to set a new record transfer fee for a teenager, paying £37million plus add-ons in 2015 – though that record has since been shattered by Paris Saint-Germain’s purchase of Martial’s countryman, Kylian Mbappe.

Though both have been linked with moves away, Solskjaer, who has won both his games as United’s caretaker manager, believes the duo are at the best place they can be.

“I know the club want them [Martial and De Gea] to sign, of course, because they are top quality players,” said Solskjaer, who became a legend at the club over 11 seasons during his playing career.

“It’s down to the players, but when you’re at Man United there isn’t a lot of greener grass on the other side.

Martial is United’s top scorer this season.

“You are at the best place. It’s the biggest club in the world.

“For me, I would hope I can help or guide these players to maybe tip them over to thinking they want to stay at this club.”
