Adam Lallana puts in a subdued performance for Liverpool on return from injury

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana made his first Premier League start since New Year’s Day at Huddersfield.

This season the 30-year-old, who is highly regarded by both Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and watching England manager Gareth Southgate, had previously played only three minutes as a substitute two months ago before being ruled out by a groin injury on international duty.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at how Lallana got on in the 69 minutes he played before being substituted.

Passing

Still has an eye to pick a pass but is better from a deeper position than the left-wing role he was handed by Klopp. Plenty of short-range offloads to team-mates but never really got the chance to turn and thread a ball through Huddersfield’s defence.

Pressing

Lallana was always the man who led the Liverpool press with his understanding of the nuances of the tactic probably better than any in the side. He was back into the groove from the off, leading the charge and was the most energetic of the front three. Was booked for an over-commitment to win the ball on the opposite side of the pitch which saw him clatter Chris Lowe.

Work-rate

Despite playing the left-wing position – and having had virtually no game time this season – tracked back with regularity to help in defensive situations but was quick to turn back the other way once possession was regained. Eventually replaced by midfielder Fabinho having run himself into the ground.

Creativity

Often dropped deep to offer a link between midfield and attack. Combined well with James Milner down the left. However, the unfamiliar make-up of the forward line, which had not played together before, meant there was not a lot of cohesion in the final third.
