Ahead of the new La Liga season, Sport360 casts its eye over five youngsters looking to make their mark on Spanish football this season.

Jose Maria Gimenez (Atletico Madrid)
Age: 20

Position: Centre-back
Nationality: Uruguayan

The departure of Miranda, who played such a key role in Atleti’s success over recent years, leaves a big gap in defence. But in Gimenez they have the perfect replacement – the 20 year-old is already established in the Uruguay team, playing alongside club team-mate Diego Godin.

Marco Asensio (Real Madrid)
Age: 19
Position: Winger
Nationality: Spanish

Was signed from Mallorca earlier this year but is now on the verge of joining Espanyol on loan, with the latter supposedly promising to select him for the majority of games. For a player widely regarded as a future superstar, it will be a wonderful toughening-up exercise.

Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao)
Age: 21
Position: Forward
Nationality: Spanish

The Basque-born frontman, with African heritage, enjoyed a splendid few months after breaking into the team midway through last season. Has sparked great anticipation among Athletic fans and is now expected to establish a regular starting place at San Mames.

Alen Halilovic (Barcelona)
Age: 19
Position: Attacking midfield
Nationality: Croatian

Gifted playmaker who appeared to struggle for motivation with Barcelona’s B team and was unable to prevent them from suffering relegation. Is set to be given the opportunity to play regular top-flight football on loan at Sporting, and there will be no excuse for another wasted year.

Eric Bailly (Villarreal)
Age:
21
Position: Centre-back
Nationality: Ivory Coast

A year ago, he was in Espanyol’s reserves and had never played first team football. But a sensational few months saw him make a 5m switch to Villarreal, replacing Gabriel Paulista, and become a continental champion with Ivory Coast. His meteoric rise should continue.

Sergi Samper (Barcelona)
Age:
20
Position: Defensive midfield
Nationality: Spanish

Long viewed as Barca’s next big thing, Samper made a handful of senior appearances last season and Luis Enrique is under pressure to use him more regularly. A complete midfielder with maturity beyond his years, Samper could prove Xavi’s natural heir – if he can get in the team.
