Lionel Messi has been named La Liga’s best player and the division’s top goalscorer for the 2017/18 season at the Marca awards.

The Argentine scored twice on his return from an arm injury in the 3-2 defeat to Real Betis at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

The 31-year-old has now been named Spain’s best player a stunning seven times, and the country’s leading goalscorer on five occasions.

“It’s good that the league is more competitive than ever,” Messi said after picking up his awards.

“There are no easy games. Anyone can beat anyone and that’s good for the spectators. I hope it stays like this.”
