Portugal 0-0 Chile (0-3 on pens): Cristiano Ronaldo criticised for shirking responsibility in Confederation Cup semis

Chile beat Portugal 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out in Wednesday’s Confederations Cup semi-finals, after the match finished goalless after extra-time, to book their place in Sunday’s final in Saint Petersburg.

Cristiano Ronaldo was criticised on social media for not taking one of the first penalties with the skipper eventually denied an opportunity thanks to Claudio Bravo’s brilliance.

The Manchester City goalkeeper was Chile’s hero saving all three penalties from Portugal’s Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani, while Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez nailed their spot-kicks for the South Americans.

Chile will now face either Germany or Mexico in Sunday’s final.

The general consensus is that Ronaldo should be taking the first penalty instead of seeking the decisive kick seeing as he is the team’s first choice from 12 yards out.
