DC United edged closer to clinching the final place in the Eastern Conference play-offs with a comfortable 5-0 win over the Montreal Impact.

Wayne Rooney continued his fine form with two second-half goals, while Paul Arriola also had a brace and Luciano Acosta netted after 17 minutes.

Acosta’s low shot sneaked in off the post to claim the early lead, with Rooney doubling the efforts from the edge of the box just after the break.

Arriola then fired his side to a 4-0 lead with two goals within 17 minutes, Rooney closing out the win after finding an empty net with less than 10 minutes until the final whistle.

DC entered the game five points behind sixth-placed Montreal but narrowed the gap to two with two games in hand.

The Seattle Sounders, meanwhile, claimed a convincing 4-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.

Raul Ruidiaz scored a brace and Nicolas Lodeiro converted from the spot before Victor Rodriguez saw out the win with an 80th-minute blast into the top left corner.

The Chicago Fire were 3-1 winners over LAFC, Djordje Mihailovic scoring his first goal of the season with an impressive volley inside the box, while a late goal from Romell Quioto gave the Houston Dynamo a 3-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Angelo Rodriguez scored twice in the first-half as Minnesota United held out for a 2-1 win over New York City FC, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued to make his mark at LA Galaxy, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps.

Toronto FC fought back from 1-0 down after 10 minutes to beat New England Revolution 4-1, while the Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union ground out a goalless draw, and FC Dallas’ place at the top of the Western Conference was put under threat by a 0-0 scoreline against Portland Timbers.
