Captain Mesut Ozil takes 13 minutes to banish Germany blues with Arsenal

He may be at the centre of a political storm in Germany, but Mesut Ozil will have felt at peace back with Arsenal after opening the scoring in a pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore.

Ozil, in his first appearance since Germany were unceremoniously dumped out of the World Cup, neatly finished Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cross to put the Gunners 1-0 up in the International Champions Cup fixture.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery had spoken of his desire to make Ozil, who had retired from internationals after accusing the German football authorities of racism over his Turkish heritage, feel valued upon his return.

The 29-year-old was made captain for the game against PSG – and repaid Emery’s faith by delivering within the opening quarter of an hour.
