Bayern Munich go in pursuit of another Bundesliga record weekend when they can make it nine wins in a row at Werder Bremen.

No club has ever won more than eight in succession from the start of the season and Bayern can break their own record at the Weserstadion, where their coach Pep Guardiola has warned that his side could also come unstuck.

“Bremen are a club with a great tradition and after four defeats in a row, their concentration and passion will be even greater,” said the former Barcelona coach.

“They want to react. It’s going to be complicated, but I have faith in my team and hope that we can continue on the level we were at prior to the international break.”

Guardiola says he only has 13 fit players for the trip north today, and one of those – Javi Martinez – is rated doubtful.

After beating Borussia Dortmund 5-1 a fortnight ago, Bayern will be looking to open up an even greater lead at the top of the Bundesliga this weekend with no side looking capable of keeping up with them this season either.

Wolfsburg, rated as their most serious challengers prior to the season, have slipped to ninth and are already 12 points adrift of the league leaders ahead of their home game against Hoffenheim.

Bayer Leverkusen have recovered a bit of ground lately, but they go into their game at Hamburg already 11 points adrift, while Schalke can try to eat into their eight-point deficit when they host Hertha Berlin, who are just two points further behind in fourth.

At the bottom of the table, Stuttgart are under pressure in their game against Ingolstadt on Sunday, with fellow strugglers Hannover in action in Cologne just hours before the Swabians take to the field.

Borussia Monchengladbach have managed to pull away from the bottom three with three wins out of three under the guidance of caretaker coach Andre Schubert, but they will be put to the test in Frankfurt tonight, after Augsburg entertain Darmstadt in the day’s other fixture.

Meanwhile, former Germany star Stefan Effenberg enjoyed a winning start to his coaching career last night when his Paderborn team beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 in the second division.

“I am very happy and delighted to see the smiles on the face of the president and all the fans,” the 47-year-old said. “I haven’t had the chance to shout over the last 10 years. I will have to get used to it.”
