Jadon Sancho dedicated his winner against Borussia Dortmund’s fierce rivals Schalke to his late grandmother.

The England international’s clever finish in the 74th minute secured all three points in a hotly-contested Revierderby at the Veltins Arena.

Sancho had missed training during the week due to the family bereavement but played and made a decisive impact.

In a video clip on the Bundesliga website, he said: “The goal means everything to my family. Sadly my grandmother passed away so that goal was for her.

“I’m glad I got the goal and helped the team to get three points.”

Thomas Delaney headed the visitors in front before the video assistant referee intervened to give Schalke a penalty which was converted by Daniel Caligiuri with just over 30 minutes remaining.

Sancho had the final say and Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre felt his side were deserving winners.

Favre said in a press conference reported on Dortmund’s website: “It was a very difficult game for us, especially in the first half.

“We deserved to win in the end. We had more possession, more chances to score but it is always hard to play against such teams.”

Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus added: “The derby always writes its own laws. Everyone has noticed the tension before.

“We have not won here for a long time. We deserved the win because we dominated the game for over 90 minutes.”

Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco said his side lacked sufficient attacking threat to win games.

In quotes reported on the club’s Twitter feed, Tedesco said: “What we simply lack is the penetration force.

“Our flanks are not good, we don’t find the player in the box. If you only score by penalties, you don’t win games.”
