Tennis legend and Madrid fanatic Rafael Nadal believes Zinedine Zidane is perfect for a club of the size and stature of Real Madrid.

Zidane was named new manager of Madrid on Monday following the dismissal of Rafael Benitez just 25 games into the La Liga season.

One of the major criticisms against Benitez was that he upset senior members in the Los Blancos squad including Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos.

Nadal, however, believes the profile and aura of Zidane will help bring the squad together, describing the Frenchman as a “humble” person.

Speaking at the Qatar Open in Doha, Nadal said: “Zidane is history of the sport, history of football, and he’s part of the history of Real Madrid.

“I know him. He’s a good person and humble person, and I think he deserve to be where he is today.

“It’s obvious that he’s good for the players. It’s good that, as one of the most important clubs of the world, Real Madrid have somebody like him on the bench managing the club, and I am happy for him.

“I wish him the best of luck.”

Nadal also voiced regret for Benitez, who released a statement on Tuesday night expressing his gratitude for having the opportunity to manage Real Madrid.

He added: “I’m sorry for Benitez, that he was not having the success that he expected, probably. And it’s tough to start a new project and after a few months goes out, so I feel very sorry for him.

“But if the feeling is needs a change, I think Zidane is the perfect position today.”
