Antonio Candreva gave the Azzuri the lead but that was cancelled out 10 minutes later by Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen.

Marc Wilmots’ side sealed the win in the second half with Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne putting the hosts 2-1 ahead, Marseille frontman Michy Batshuayi sealing the win for the Red Devils.

Arjen Robben scored a late winner for the Netherlands as they denied Euro 2016-bound Wales a draw in Cardiff.

The Dutch prevailed 3-2 thanks to a brace from the fit-again Bayern Munich winger, Wolfsburg’s Bas Dost netting the opener in the first half.

The hosts equalised through Joe Ledley, who netted from the rebound after Jasper Cillessen had saved Joe Allen’s spot-kick. Wigan’s Emyr Huws netted his first Wales goal to make it 2-2 after Robben’s first goal.

Steven Davis struck as Northern Ireland beat Latvia 1-0 in Belfast.

Elsewhere, the Czech Republic sauntered to a 4-1 home win over Serbia. Tomas Sivok scored the only goal of the first half at the Mestsky Stadium, with Tomas Necid’s 63rd minute penalty doubling the scores.

Petar Skuletic reduced the deficit but late goals from Ladislav Krejci and Ondrej Zahustel sealed a comfortable win.

Iceland took the lead in Warsaw but striker Robert Lewandowski struck twice in the second half to help Poland to a 4-2 win. Kamil Grosicki and Bartosz Kapustka scored Poland’s first two goals, with Gylfi Sigurdsson levelling the game before Lewandowski took centre stage.
