Luis Suarez praised Barcelona’s tactics after scoring twice to give his team a commanding lead in their Champions League quarter final clash with Paris Saint-Germain last night.

The Uruguayan striker pounced twice in the space of 12 second half minutes to send the Blaugrana on their way to a 3-1 victory, surely making next week’s return leg at the Nou Camp little more than a formality.

And he was quick to hail his team’s mentality, as he said: “We were intelligent and showed a lot of concentration against an opponent of this quality.”

It was the first time PSG have lost a European tie at home in 33 games, and Suarez was especially proud of his team’s ability to triumph so convincingly in Paris.

“They are very strong in their own stadium but we were able to take control of the game,” he said. “I don’t think we should overlook the tactical work that we did. We also ran a lot and physically worked hard, and you noticed it.”

Suarez has enjoyed an outstanding Champions League campaign, scoring his first goal for his new club in a group stage victory over APOEL and adding another brace away from home in the previous round against Manchester City.

And he believed a key to the success was that Barca had taken a positive approach into the game, playing firmly to win rather than taking more cautious tactics.

“We were conscious that we had to win the game to stay on the right path in the Champions League,” he said.

However, he is refusing to take for granted his team’s progression, adding: “In football you never know what can happen, 90 minutes are still remaining and PSG have a lot of quality.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have it all to do after losing 3-1 to Porto in Portugal. But skipper Philipp Lahm remains hopeful of a turnaround at the Allianz Arena next week.

Two of Porto’s goals came from individual errors, but Lahm said: “We always want to play from the back and this style can sometimes be dangerous, but mistakes are part of football. The 3-1 defeat hurts, but nevertheless there is still all to play for in the return leg.”
