Manuel Pellegrini insists he needs to spend big this summer if his Manchester City side are going to compete with Europe's best. Sport360 takes a look at which stars the Premier League champions are eyeing up and what their realistic chances are of signing:

– INSIDE STORY: How EPL changed English football forever

RAHEEM STERLING

Another Englishman with huge potential at 20, but doubts remain whether he can produce performances on the world stage, not just the Premier League. Contract row with Liverpool suggests he could be sold this summer. CHANCE: 9/10

KEVIN DE BRUYNE

How Chelsea must rue letting the Belgian attacking midfielder go last year. Made just three appearances for the Blues before they sold him to Wolfsburg and his value has rocketed as he has become an influential playmaker for club and country.
CHANCE: 8/10

PAUL POGBA

The Frenchman has been coveted by Europe’s elite after his powerful displays for Juventus. Left Manchester when United didn’t play him, but City will give him the platform to drive them to more glory. But they will not be alone in wanting him. CHANCE: 7/10

ROSS BARKLEY

The attacking midfielder, 21, would tick the homegrown player box and provide guile and unpredictable craft to the City side. But
despite being lauded for his talent and undoubted potential, he has struggled this season to make Everton’s first team.
CHANCE: 7/10

GARETH BALE

The Welshman would definitely fit the bill of a big-name signing and there’s a chance given his troubles at Real Madrid. While he wants to prove his worth and can be unstoppable on his day, disgruntled fans could force the exit of the €100m man but he would
not come cheap. CHANCE: 6/10

LIONEL MESSI

The one that they want, the one everyone wants, but prising the Argentine from Barcelona would appear impossible now that he
seems happier again at his club and producing sensational displays. With the new Premier League TV deal, City would have the cash to splash and every major player has had his price over the years… CHANCE: 1/10
