Inter legend Zenga linked with replacing Mazzarri

Internazionale could turn to club hero and ex-Al Jazira boss Walter Zenga if they decide to sack Walter Mazzarri after a poor start to the Serie A season.

Mazzarri, 53, has come under intense pressure after consecutive defeats to Cagliari and Fiorentina saw his side concede seven goals and score once.

Inter currently sit 10th and reports in Italian daily sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport suggest Mazzarri could be dispensed with if they lose the October 19 meeting with Napoli, the side whom he left to join the Nerazzurri in summer 2013.

President Erick Thohir denied reports on Tuesday that Roberto Mancini was set to return to the San Siro.

Despite the show of faith in Mazzarri, this has not decreased speculation that a defeat following the international break will be terminal.

This scenario opens the possibility of Zenga heading back to the team for whom he gained legendary status as a goalkeeper.

The 54-year-old made more than 500 appearances for them between 1982 and 1994.

Zenga was drafted in by Jazira last October, guiding the club from mid-table to third place.

Such a performance with Inter would ensure the return of Champions League football after last season's fifth-placed finish.

The 58-times capped Italy international has been without a coaching position since leaving Jazira following May's AFC Champions League round of 16 exit.

Zenga previously coached in Serie A at Sicilian rivals Palermo and Cagliari. He has also bossed Al Nasr and Al Ain, as well as sides in United States, Romania, Serbia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
