Arsenal’s defence played some of its best football to deny Parma successive European Cup Winners’ Cup titles on this day in 1994 with a 1-0 victory in Copenhagen.

The 34th edition of the prestigious tournament saw the Gunners earn the title, with Alan Smith securing their only goal and the defence denying chances for the ultimate ‘one nil to Arsenal’.

The match’s lone score came in the 20th minute when Lorenzo Minotti missed an overhead clearance, allowing Smith to capitalise with a left-footed volley past Luca Bucci. The backline then controlled stars Gianfranco Zola and Faustino Asprilla to seal the deal, making Arsenal the fourth London club to win the trophy.

Other memorable moments that happened on this day:

1924: The eighth Olympic Games begin in Paris, France.

1974: Cannonade, ridden by Angel Cordero Jr, wins the 100th Kentucky Derby in a time of 2:04.

2013: Floyd Mayweather Jr beats Robert Guerrero in a unanimous decision to retain his WBC welterweight title.

2015: Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is named NBA’s MVP.
