Euro 2016 Player of the Day: Luka Modric (Croatia)

It was one of those performances that will be placed in coaching videos for years to come. Modric’s in-game stats don’t jump out as being exceptional but he was Croatia’s chief conductor and Turkey couldn’t lay a finger on him.

Primarily playing a deep role, allowing those ahead of him – and the Croats have probably the tournament’s best midfield unit – Modric picked passes at will, controlling the tempo and dictating his team’s dominance.

Of course, there was the goal. A wonderful technical volley that required little power, just the perfect connection. A striker that, no doubt, would have had his manager at Madrid, Zinedine Zidane purring.
