Belgium needed an equaliser a minute from time from Everton’s Romelu Lukaku to save their blushes in Brussels against Finland.

Kasper Hamalainen gave the 61st ranked Finland, who came into the match on the back of four straight defeats, a 53rd minute lead.

Despite fielding the likes of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Belgium lacked creativity and struggled to break down disciplined and defensive opponents in a half-empty stadium.

Much of Belgium’s early threat came from Jan Vertonghen as the Tottenham defender tested keeper Lukas Hradecky on a couple of occasions, including one blistering free kick.

Hradecky was on fire and when Belgium did beat him, Michy Batshuayi’s header came back off the upright. Despite Belgium’s dominance, it was Finland who broke through when Hamalainen scored against the run of play.

Christian Benteke was the next to threaten, but the Liverpool striker missed at the back post.

Belgium did finally level it up in the 90th minute when substitute Lukaku rescued a draw with his 14th goal for the Red Devils to stave off a shock defeat Marc Wilmots’s side will next face Norway in their final warm-up game on Sunday before beginning their Euro 2016 campaign against Italy on June 13.

Elsewhere, in a match between two qualified sides, Czech Republic got the better of Russia 2-1 in Innsbruck, Austria. Aleksandr Kokorin gave Russia a sixth-minute lead but Tomas Rosicky equalised from a volley
