So who makes up this week’s top five? 1) JOHN STONES (Everton) – 8.32
An outstanding individual display from Stones in Everton’s away stalemate at Swansea sees him top the Premier League pile this week. The centre-back is doing his best to make Toffees fans forget about his transfer request last month and against the Swans, he was imperious alongside Phil Jagielka. A magnificent last-ditch challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis was probably the pick of the bunch as Everton’s 10 men held on for a valuable point. That £30 million (Dh171m) price tag will soon be on the rise.
2) NICOLAS OTAMENDI (Manchester City) – 7.67
With Vincent Kompany out injured, Otamendi was thrown in for his first Man City start against West Ham. It didn’t go to plan as the Hammers claimed a 2-1 victory but on a personal level, Otamendi comfortably outshone central defensive partner Eliaquim Mangala, so much so that the latter was withdrawn for Martin Demichelis at half-time. The former Valencia defender almost snatched a late equaliser at the other end, too, but Adrian superbly denied him from close range.
3) CESC FABREGAS (Chelsea) – 7.67
It’s been a slow start to the season for Cesc Fabregas but he registered his first Premier League assist of 2014-15 against former club Arsenal, his perfectly flighted free-kick finding Kurt Zouma as the Blues put the Gunners to the sword. Fabregas was the key cog in Chelsea’s midfield at Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard dictating play and maintaining possession.
4) WINSTON REID (West Ham) – 7.57
A colossus at the back for the Hammers, keeping Sergio Aguero quiet as his side stunned City at the Etihad Stadium. Let’s leave it to Reid’s boss Slaven Bilic, to explain why he was man of the match: “Winston Reid was…it was like a couple of twins on the pitch, like two Reid brothers! He was always at the right place, he was a leader at the back today – he was really good.”
5) KEVIN DE BRUYNE (Manchester City) – 7.55
Like team-mate Otamendi, De Bruyne impressed despite being on the losing side on his full debut. Was the beating heart of everything City did; pin-point passing was complemented by confidence on the ball, a willingness to track back defensively, and a goal courtesy of a rasping shot.
