The veteran French coach stood down at the end of the Premier League season following 22 years at the helm of the Gunners, with the search now on for his successor.

Former Arsenal midfielder Arteta has emerged as a leading contender, having worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at champions Manchester City.

Wenger has no doubts the 36-year-old would be up to the challenge and, in an interview with beIN SPORTS, he said: “He has all the qualities to do the job and I think as well he is one of the favourites.

“He was a leader, and he has a good passion for the game and he knows the club well, he knows what is important at the club and he was captain of the club. Why not?”
