Mohamed Salah has been ruled out of the Merseyside derby through injury, with Jurgen Klopp electing to keep him in cotton wool ahead of their Champions League return leg against Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Liverpool striker Danny Ings was handed his first start under Klopp as the boss named a stronger line-up than anticipated for the clash against city rivals Everton.

Ings was part of a front three including Sadio Mane and Dominic Solanke, with Salah (groin) not risked ahead of the UCL quarter-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Nathaniel Clyne was given his first outing of the season at right-back in a defence which also included Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren and a third centre-back Ragnar Klavan on the left.

Captain Jordan Henderson – suspended for Tuesday – James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum were in midfield, with youngsters Conor Masterson and Curtis Jones named among the substitutes.
