Former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is likely to break his long-standing record for most goals in a Premier League season.

Shearer currently holds the joint-record for goals scored in a 42-game campaign (34) – alongside Andy Cole – and a 38-game season (31), a feat he shares with former Reds star Luis Suarez and ex-Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Salah’s stunning form has seen him net 28 goals already in the Premier League this season, with seven games still to come for Jurgen Klopp’s men, and Shearer accepts he may be waving goodbye to two records come May.

“He’s got every chance. The form he is in is incredible,” Shearer told Sport360 after Hublot’s Match of Friendship in Basel. “Every time he goes out onto the pitch – and I know the feeling well – he feels as though he’s going to score goals.

“So he should. He’s in brilliant form and has been all season. If he can stay fit for the rest of the season then he’s got every chance of breaking those records.

“It’s brilliant that he’s doing so well. I’m pretty certain Liverpool fans will want him to stay long-term and do it every season. The hard part for Salah is when everyone knows your game and it becomes more difficult next season and the season after.

“But you can’t take anything away from him. He’s been absolutely magnificent and it has been great to see.”

Salah’s goalscoring displays mean he’s one of two names being touted for the PFA Premier League Player of the Year. The other standout performer in the eyes of many has been Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, and Shearer feels the battle for the individual award will go right down to the wire.

“They are the two this season. I honestly think right now that it is neck and neck. It all depends what happens in the next six or seven weeks until the end of the season,” Shearer added.

“There’s a lot still to play for, that’s for both of those clubs and the two players.”
