Sergio Aguero the benchmark for Premier League strikers as Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku continue to improve

With the way Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku have performed over the last few seasons, it’s easy to forget that both strikers are young and are likely to improve even further.

Both Kane and Lukaku feature in the top 10 strikers for goals scored over the last five Premier League seasons, at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The man they’re looking to unseat from the top? Sergio Aguero.

Given that he’s the Premier League’s top scorer in the last five seasons, there’s no surprise that he consistently features at the top in terms of the best scoring rate, regularly coming close to hitting the goal-a-game ratio – and indeed, crossing it, on occasion.

There’s been a lot of debate about whether Kane is world-class – and he performs often enough on the grandest stages, under pressure, to merit at least the discussion – and while Lukaku isn’t yet part of that conversation, consistently performing at a big club like Manchester United will quickly put him there.

But first, the two 24-year-olds have a more obvious target: become as clinical as the player Thierry Henry described as the Premier League’s only world-class striker.
