Five potential replacements for sacked Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka

Speculation is well underway as to who will replace sacked Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka.

The Boro board ended his three-and-a-half year stay on Teesside on Thursday but who will take up the reigns from the Spaniard?

The club are second from bottom in the Premier League and have recorded the fewest wins of any side this season (four).

Here are five men the Reds could turn to next:

CLAUDIO RANIERI

The footballing community is still hurting after Ranieri’s shock Leicester sacking and a move back into management at the first time of asking may just suit the Italian down to the ground.

His appointment would certainly win over the club’s fanbase quickly and Boro would automatically pick up a legion of fans around the globe.

ALAN PARDEW

Pardew was sacked as Crystal Palace boss in December 2016, only a few months after guiding them to the FA Cup final.

A move further north may not quite be what he’s after and Boro fans probably won’t be happy to see a former Newcastle boss in charge.

NIGEL PEARSON

The former Leicester manager has been out of work since leaving Derby County in October 2016 and has recently thrown his hat in the ring for the vacant job at Norwich City.

He is though a man for a relegation battle and could be a shrewd appointment for Boro.

STEVE MCCLAREN

Another name doing the rounds is McClaren, who was sacked by Derby only recently.

Could he return to the Riverside Stadium for a second spell?

He enjoyed five successful years at Boro from June 2001 to May 2006, before taking on the England job.

ROY HODGSON

Yet another former England coach.

Hodgson is vastly experienced, and if he feels he has another Premier League challenge left in him, a move to Boro may just tick the right bosses.

This is probably the most unlikely of our chosen five but he has been linked with Norwich.
