Real Madrid are lining up a big-money summer swoop for the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper after growing tired of Keylor Navas’ inconsistent form between the sticks.

De Gea is under contract at Old Trafford until 2019 and a key part of Jose Mourinho’s plans for the Red Devils, but it remains to be seen whether the Premier League club can stave off interest yet again from the Spanish giants.

Here, we look at five goalkeeping replacements who could potentially occupy the position between the sticks for United.

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA

The 18-year-old AC Milan stopper is still in the informative years of his goalkeeping career and a move to Old Trafford may yet come too soon, but the teen has already shown his star quality on the international stage and would be a big investment for the future.

BERND LENO – BAYER LEVERKUSEN

The 25-year-old is the third best goalkeeper in Germany right now, behind Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

He has got enormous talent but is still prone to the odd mistake.

Signing him would be a gamble and he may take a bit of time to adapt to playing for a big club.

FRASER FORSTER – SOUTHAMPTON

The South Coast stopper hasn’t enjoyed his best season but a move to a bigger club is still on the cards in the near future.

Forster, 28, has been linked with a switch to Everton recently and this coming summer could be the right time for him to leave St Mary’s.

He would definitely be a low-risk acquisition for United.

JORDAN PICKFORD

The Black Cats goalie won’t be short of offers at the end of the season, regardless if Sunderland stay in the top flight or not.

Boss David Moyes has described the 23-year-old as an “exceptional talent” and Mourinho may just decide to pursue his signature.

JAN OBLAK (ATLETICO MADRID)

The Slovenian is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and the Madrid-based club won’t want to let go of him.

But, if the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Diego Simeone look for fresh starts at the end of the season, the 24-year-old may decide it’s time to follow them out of the door.

Oblak would be an excellent purchase for United.

And, one last leftfield choice…

ALEX MERET (UDINESE – CURRENTLY ON LOAN AT SPAL)

The 6’3 goalkeeper is rated as one of the hottest prospects in Italian football and has caught the eye of many leading clubs across Europe.

He starred for Italy’s Under-19 side at last year’s European Under-19 Championships, and although he has yet to play a match in Serie A, he is very much one for the coming years.
