Diego Costa marked his return to the Chelsea team with a goal in a 2-0 victory over Hull City but the game was marred by a serious head injury suffered by Ryan Mason.

Messages of support have been sent to Mason after the Hull midfielder suffered a fractured skull.

He is in a stable condition in hospital after undergoing surgery at St Mary’s Hospital in London following a clash of heads with Gary Cahill during the first half of Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea.

The 25-year-old is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.

Footballers immediately took to Twitter to show their support for the Hull midfielder with former teammates Gareth Bale and Harry Kane leading the way.
