In 2004, Patrick Kluivert moved to Tyneside from Barcelona stating that the reception he received during a pre-season friendly from the Newcastle faithful was a big factor in his decision to move there.

Although the Toon Army finished in the bottom-half during his stint at the club, Kluivert scored two vital winners against Chelsea and Tottenham in the FA Cup, leading Newcastle to a semi-final appearance in the 2004-05 edition of the competition.

However, the Dutchman’s late involvement in that match was to no avail as soon to be runners-up Manchester United thrashed the Magpies 4-1.

Across all competitions, Kluivert bagged 13 goals in 37 appearances before heading back to Spain where he signed for Valencia.

2008: Petr Cech penned a new five-year contract with Chelsea, the same day they agreed to sell Claude Makelele to Paris St Germain and Khalid Boulahrouz to Stuttgart.

2012: South Africa captain Graeme Smith marked his 100th Test by scoring 131 on day three of this first Test against England at The Oval.

2014: England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard announced he was retiring from international football after earning 114 caps over 14 years.
