The Swans stormed out of the blocks at Wembley, up 3-0 at halftime thanks to Scott Sinclair’s double and a Scott Dobbie strike.

Brian McDermott’s Royals refused to lie down though, and brought it back to 3-2 just before the hour through Joe Allen’s own goal and a Matt Mills header. Sinclair settled any nerves for Brendan Rodgers’ men when he scored his second penalty of the afternoon to seal a return to England’s top flight for the Swans for the first time since 1983.

Other unforgettable moments on this day:

1911: American Ray Harroun, 32, wins the inaugural Indianapolis 500 at Speedway, Indiana, driving a Marmon Wasp.

2002: Former Great Britain international Karl Harrison took over as coach at Super League Salford.

2015: Alastair Cook becomes England’s all-time leading Test runscorer, surpassing mentor Graham Gooch’s 8,900, during a match against New Zealand.
