Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho signed a three-year contract with the Old Trafford outfit.

Mourinho arrives in Manchester to replace former mentor Louis van Gaal who was sacked by the Red Devils earlier in the week despite earning the club a first FA Cup title in 14 years just days ago.

With three Premier League titles and two European Cups to his name, the 53-year-old will be expected to return Manchester United to the top of the pile in England for the first time since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson three years ago.

The club will now compete in the Europa League next season having finished the 2015-16 season in fifth position in the Premier League.

The move sees Mourinho return to English football just months after being relieved of his duties as manager of Chelsea following a disappointing start to a season which also saw him embroiled in a controversial dispute with former physio Eva Carneiro.

His sacking came just months after guiding Chelsea to the 2014-15 Premier League title.
