Gonzalo Jara’s participation in the Copa America is now in serious doubt after the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) confirmed they will make an official complaint over his actions during their 1-0 loss to hosts Chile.

Footage showed defender Jara poking his finger into the anus of Edinson Cavani during the quarterfinal meeting with La Celeste earlier this week. Cavani reacted by making contact with Jara’s face – which left the Chilean collapsed on the ground despite the minimal contact.

Cavani received a second booking and was sent off. Uruguay’s FA have said they will raise a complaint against Jara for provoking Cavani, meaning CONMEBOL’s disciplinary committee will now deal with the incident.

They said in a statement: “The AUF’s executive committee decided to open the defence of the player Edinson Cavani. It denounced to CONMEBOL’s disciplinary body the actions of the player Gonzalo Jara.”

Both matters are likely to be heard tomorrow, ahead of Chile’s semi-final meeting with Peru. Uruguay’s players, fans and media have expressed outrage in the wake of the incident, with former national team captain Diego Lugano even threatening retribution the next time he faces Jara on the pitch. “We’re going to have to have a word with that lad ‘Jarita’ (little Jara) when our paths cross,” the centre back said via Twitter.
