Barcelona’s new signing Frenkie de Jong admitted that he consulted Dutch national team manager and former Camp Nou favourite Ronald Koeman before choosing the Catalan club as his next destination.

The Ajax midfielder’s talent was not a secret and heavyweights like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City were also vying for his signature.

Ultimately, De Jong chose Barca and will join the club in the summer. The contract that he signed sees him tied to the Catalan club until 2024.

The Dutchman admitted that he consulted his national team coach and former Barca player Koeman before signing for the Blaugrana.

“Yes, I asked him a lot,” De Jong replied when asked if he’d discussed the transfer with his national team coach prior to signing, according to Marca.

“I knew that he had enjoyed success there. I wanted to know what the city was like, what the daily life was like and what the club was like.

“It’s reassuring to know these things before going.”
