Luis Suarez delivered record-breaking assist for Lionel Messi in Barcelona draw

Barcelona‘s equalising goal against Valencia on Sunday was a vital one for a side looking to avoid a second loss in three La Liga games, but the strike also had greater significance.

Lionel Messi‘s long-range goal came after a one-two with Luis Suarez, and though it didn’t prevent Barca from slipping to a fourth straight league game without a win, it did put Suarez in the history books.

No player has assisted Messi more times in La Liga than the Uruguayan, who set up his strike partner for the 27th time in the competition.

That took him past former Barca right-back Dani Alves, the current Paris Saint-Germain right-back who had assisted Messi 26 times during a eight-year spell in Catalonia before leaving for Juventus in 2016.

Another former club of Alves, Sevilla, have taken over top spot in the league thanks to Barca’s draw, with the two sides set to meet at the Camp Nou after the international break.
