Having battled to a 7-6 aggregate two-legged semi-final victory over China’s Dalian Shide, Al Ain’s reward was a final match-up with BEC Tero Sasana, of Thailand.

The opening tie of the two-match final took place at the Tahnoun Bin Mohamed Stadium.

And home advantage was just the ticket Bruno Metsu’s team needed.

In front of a capacity crowd, Al Ain cruised past their opponents, the Fire Dragons, running out 2-0 winners. Once again, Mohammad Omar was on the scoresheet – adding to an earlier strike from Salem Johar.

It’s fair to say that Al Ain went home that night with one hand on the trophy.

The second-leg, though, at the 72-years Anniversary Stadium in capital Bangkok – proved to be a more challenging affair. It wasn’t all plain-sailing for the UAE side.

But, in truth, Metsu’s players were comfortable for most of the match, where chances were few and far between.

However, the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot on the hour mark – with Therdsak Chaiman slotting home to make it 2-1 on aggregate.

Despite having to withstand heavy late pressure, Al Ain clung on for victory and made history becoming the first team to win the inaugural event.
