Coach Caio Junior rued his side’s missed chances as Al Shabab were held to a 1-1 draw to Bani Yas.

Jo cancelled out Fawaz Awana’s early strike as both teams maintained their unbeaten start to the season at Bani Yas stadium.

The Brazilian’s goal was a reward for the visitors’ possession, with Junior’s men wasteful in front of goal.

The home fans did not have to wait long for the Sky Blues to score, Awana heading home from close range in the third minute following Amer Abdulrahman’s corner.

That goal saw the visitors find their rhythm but it was Bani Yas who were more likely to score.

Playing in his preferred left wing position, new signing Royston Drenthe nearly opened his Sky Blues account. Yousef Jaber found space in his opponent’s half and rolled the ball to the Dutchman, but his shot went agonisingly wide in the 20th minute.

Seven minutes later, goalkeeper Mohammed Khalef was called into action for the first time, denying Jo from an acute angle. The visitors continued to up their tempo, as Azizbek Haydarov’s shot went over the bar.

With Haydarov and captain Luvannor Henrique dictating play in the middle of the park, the Hawks were nearly level on terms after the restart.

After a long ball deceived the Bani Yas defence, Henrique broke behind Bani Yas’ back four but his weak shot did not trouble Khalef.

But Al Shabab were rewarded 10 minutes from time. Substitute Abdulla Faraj picked out Jo from the right hand side, and the former Manchester City and Everton striker made no mistake, stretching his leg out to beat Khalef.

Elsewhere, Dibba struck twice in two minutes to stun Al Jazira 4-2 at the Fujairah Stadium.

Tariq Ahmed and Bakary Kone scored in the last five minutes to give the newly-promoted team a stunning victory.
