Lima hopes to strike up deadly Al Ahli partnership with Everton Ribeiro

Al Ahli summer signing Lima is convinced the samba football enjoyed between himself and Brazilian compatriot Everton Ribeiro can fire the club to silverware.

Lima, 32, has impressed with four goals in three competitive appearances since his €7 million (Dh28.4m) switch from Portuguese outfit Benfica.

A huge part in his success has been played by Canarinhos playmaker Ribeiro, the duo’s interplay at its lethal best when they both got braces during the 8-1 dismantling of Fujairah which opened the 2015/16 Arabian Gulf League on August 19.

“When you play with a big player, it’s always going to be easier,” the former Braga star said at his unveiling on Wednesday alongside Senegal forward Moussa Sow.

“Everton is an excellent player and not just inside the pitch – he’s also a great man and this relationship will reflect on the pitch.

“I hope this partnership will help Ahli achieve their goals. I wish that we will continue in this way.”

Sow and Lima have provided an expensive refit for the Red Knights as they seek to reach the summit of the domestic game once again.

Their meek title defence last term was caused by a paltry return of 35 goals in 26 matches, which is a problem they will not face in 2015/16.

“It’s been a nice start with Al Ahli and even in this short time, I have adapted to the way of the team,” Lima said. “I’m sure the arrival of Sow will help a lot. But it’s not just him – all the players who play in attack can score and help us achieve our goals.”

Despite enjoying a breathtaking opening in the UAE, Lima insisted he had been surprised by the standard of football after coming off a glorious three-year spell at Aguias which had delivered 70 goals in 144 appearances plus the previous two Primeira Liga crowns.

He said: “Every time in training and in matches, I get surprised about the level of the league and my colleagues. When I arrived, I didn’t expect this.

“But when I came here I saw that the team, the management and the club are all very organised. I have confidence the club will reach its targets because they have a champion’s mentality.”

Lima should next be in action for the Red Knights on Saturday when they travel to Al Shaab in the Arabian Gulf Cup.
