PLC go ahead with scheduled Arabian Gulf Super Cup clash despite Gulf Cup confusion

The Pro League Committee has confirmed the Arabian Gulf Super Cup will kick off the domestic campaign as scheduled on Saturday, though no declaration has yet been made about the other competitions.

The organising body has been left in limbo by political infighting in Kuwait about whether last week’s sanctioned request to postpone December’s Gulf Cup by one year will be reversed.

This saw a delay proposed to mid-September for the imminent showpiece match between Al Ain and Nasr and the Arabian Gulf League. But the PLC ended the speculation about the Super Cup yesterday, stating in a press release “a coordination meeting” between themselves, Abu Dhabi Police and security services was held at host-venue Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

“Through today’s meeting we aimed to discuss all safety and security matters related to Saturday’s match, including the procedures to ensure smooth entry to the stadium for fans, and the types of banners and props permitted in the stadium for fans to support and cheer on their teams,” PLC CEO Suhail Al Areefi said.

“We are keen to coordinate thoroughly with all parties, and this meeting follows on from an earlier meeting in July during which various detailed technical elements were discussed and agreed upon.”

As it stands, the top flight will begin next Wednesday when Al Ahli host Fujairah. The first round of the Arabian Gulf Cup should follow on August 27, Al Shabab playing newly-promoted Dibba Al Fujairah and holders Al Nasr travelling to Bani Yas.
