Al Wahda’s mission to hire Paul Le Guen as their new coach has hit a serious last-minute hitch after Oman rejected reports he was set to take the post.

The Clarets have agreed a one-year deal with the 51-year-old to replace Sami Al Jaber in the Al Nahyan Stadium dugout, only his signature awaiting. But there would appear to be much work left with the Oman Football Association to make this happen.

“OFA denies the rumour about Paul Le Guen signing for a club in the Gulf,” they tweeted. “Le Guen continues his duties as the head coach of Oman national team.”

The club are expecting a busy few days, senior officials returning to the Emirates to finalise one signing from a trio of central midfielders.

Sao Paulo midfielder Denilson is one of them, an answer expected shortly on a complex transfer also involving third-party investors. The 27-year-old was withdrawn from the Tricolor squad for the Campeonato Brasileiro clash at Chapecoense as negotiations continue.

A representative of Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel further claimed Wahda are trying to buy him. “I read so many stories that he is joining Al Ain but it’s not true,” they told news24.com. “He has so many offers from clubs, including UAE club Al Wahda.”

Meanwhile, President’s Cup winners Al Nasr will begin the defence of their crown against Sharjah following the draw ceremony.

Beaten finalists Al Ahli will play the FA Cup champions and AGL champions Al Ain will play the runners-up of a tournament played by UAE Division 1 Group A clubs.
