Al Wahda youngster Ahmed Al Akbari is set to travel abroad for “urgent surgery” on the fractured back suffered during Thursday morning’s road accident.

Al Akbari, 21, was transferred immediately to Abu Dhabi’s Mafraq Hospital after an incident that Emarat Al Youm newspaper reported as being caused by a tyre blowout. His father, Salman, then confirmed on Saturday that the emerging starlet – who has scored once in four 2018/19 Arabian Gulf League appearances – was in a “stable” condition in intensive care.

The next stage of his treatment will see the UAE Under-23 international receive specialist treatment away from the capital.

“Under direction from Sheikh Theyab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of Al Wahda, Ahmed Al Akbari and his family will travel to a hospital abroad to receive the needed medication,” a club statement read.

“The recent tests shows that Ahmed Al Akbari has fractured his back and he needs an urgent surgery to avoid any aggravation.”

Eurosport Arabia stated he will travel to Germany to undergo the procedure.

Al Akbari’s car flipped several times. Fractures to his ribs – that caused difficulty to his breathing – and back were incurred.

Al Akbari is considered an outstanding prospect and future senior UAE international. In his absence on Saturday night, Wahda went down to a shock 4-2 home loss to strugglers Al Dhafra.

His brother, Mohamed, struck in Al Nasr’s 3-1 Bur Dubai derby win against Al Wasl on Friday. Ex-Real Madrid and Spain striker Alvaro Negredo dedicated his goal in the same game to the family.
