Arabian Gulf League champions Al Ahli have bolstered their defence with the capture of UAE international Essa Santo from Al Wahda.

The 27-year-old has joined on a four-year contract after the Red Knights agreed to pay an undisclosed fee and let 18-year-old midfielder Mohammed Abdul Basit join the Abu Dhabi-based club.

Santo started both of Wahda’s opening top-flight victories, with the expiry of his contract next summer helping to force his exit.

He goes straight into the Al Ahli squad for Friday’s Dubai derby at Al Wasl.

The full-back has been a regular pick by UAE coach Mahdi Ali, starting the goalless draw against Norway last month in the first of a trio of pre-season friendlies.

Santo is Cosmin Olaroiu’s fourth major signing of the summer transfer window.
