Jorginho to turn down Brazil and honour Al Wasl contract

Jorginho has pledged his future to Al Wasl, ending speculation that he was set to return to the Brazil national team coaching set-up alongside close friend Dunga.

The 49-year-old – who is yet to lead a competitive game since it was announced he was to become Wasl boss in April – was expected to take up the assistant coaching role he previously held for the Selecao from 2006 to 2010 following the confirmation that Dunga was to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The pair have enjoyed a long history in the game together, winning the 1994 World Cup as players.

They later went on to guide the nation to success at the 2007 Copa America and 2009 Confederations Cup, before being sacked in the wake of the 2-1 quarter-final defeat to the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup.

Despite their strong links, Jorginho has wished Dunga every success in his new post and set his sights on making a success of his first job in the Middle East.

He said: “Me and my associates are happy to work for the Yellow Castle, and I respect the contract between me and the club.

“I hope to stay the longest period possible in this club and to achieve the desired results that will satisfy everyone”

The ex-Bayern Munich defender, who is contracted for one year, faces the task of rejuvenating a Wasl team that finished one place above the relegation zone last term.

Another World Cup winner from 1994, Mauro Silva, will serve as assistant coach when Brazil face Colombia and Ecuador on September 5 and 8 in friendly internationals.
