Al Nasr to appeal AFC decision to overturn Champions League quarter-final first-leg win due to Wanderley passport irregularities

Al Nasr will appeal the Asian Football Confederation’s decision to overturn the Dubai club’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over El Jaish due to irregularities with striker Wanderley’s Indonesian passport.

In a series of tweets, Nasr “deplored” the AFC verdict and stated that they will contest the federation’s decision made on Monday.

Wanderley, 27, joined Al Nasr in July and scored twice on his debut in last month’s 3-0 win over El Jaish, but he was provisionally suspended as doubts emerged over his nationality.

As a result, Nasr now head into Wednesday’s second-leg in Dubai on the receiving end of a three-goal deficit after the Qatari side were awarded a 3-0 victory.

Teams are allowed to field three foreigners in the competition, plus one more if the player has Asian nationality.

The AFC said investigations were continuing into who was responsible for the “forgery or falsification” of Wanderley’s passport.

“The Asian Football Confederation disciplinary committee has ordered the AFC Champions League quarter-final first-leg match El Jaish vs Al Nasr forfeited,” an AFC statement said.

“The committee held, on the basis of information received from various state authorities and after analysing the case file, that the Indonesian passport submitted to register Wanderley was false.”

Wanderley was sanctioned with a provisional suspension earlier this month, meaning he will miss the Blue Wave’s return fixture.

The club were also fined $1,000 and the full investigation into his case continues.
