Abdullah Qassem begs forgiveness as former UAE international completes Fujairah move

An offensive video was published online last August which featured the two-times-capped forward making derogatory remarks and crude gestures directed at Whites boss Mahdi Ali.

This led to legal problems for both the player and a team-mate from Al Dhafra, who immediately suspended the pair.

The 29-year-old has now been given a fresh chance at the Wolves as they rebuild in First Division League under coach Eid Baroot.

“I apologise to the sport and to the public in the street for what happened in the past,” he said at a press conference on Monday after he inked a two-year deal. “I recognised the mistake committed by myself and I regret it.

“I want to put this in the past and I ask forgiveness from everyone. I have great confidence in myself and I have not stopped practicing despite not playing for a year.”

Qassem has provided a wayward presence in recent years, making only 12 Arabian Gulf League
appearances – with the last coming in a 2-2 at Dhafra on April 3, 2015 – during his solitary campaign at Al Nasr after departing Al Jazira in pursuit of a more prominent role.

He then made the ill-fated switch to the western region in June 2015, where he was soon waylaid by scandal.

New employers Fujairah are determined to win immediate promotion, something Qassem is convinced they are capable of achieving.

He said: “I hope to present to the Fujairah leadership what is required of me. I want to play well for the management and make the club‘s fans think well of me.

“I aspire to make the most of this golden opportunity, and I will listen to coach Eid Baroot’s instructions. I stress that Fujairah are capable of a potential comeback to the Arabian Gulf League.”

Fujairah were also boosted earlier this week by the addition of midfielder Yaser Matar, 30, from Al Ain.
